LAST week I attended a social media workshop held in Port Elizabeth by Oracle Media, a company specialising in digital marketing, promotions and social networking.

The workshop was presented by founder Neil Barker, who previously practised as an attorney and holds a law degree from NMMU which ads tremendously to his knowledge of the dos and don’ts of social media.

Barker started with his first clients, Peugeot and Citroen in Port Elizabeth, in 2012 and helps other local clients by developing their online strategies and online marketing campaigns.

He has numerous clients throughout the country and specialises in servicing hotels and their allied industries but the bulk of his client base is in Port Elizabeth.

He outlined the do’s and don’ts of social media and emphasised the need to embrace change.

“Mobile has 84% of the market share of Facebook, so ensure that you are mobile friendly,” Barker said. “Facebook is a tool to educate people about your product.”

After an interactive session, delegates were so busy trying out new “tricks of the trade” on their smart phones that the workshop was over too soon. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a tasty meal at the Isango Gate Boutique Hotel and Spa.
